Frequently asked questions

Why is it called Salpakan?

Salpakan comes from the Filipino root word salpak, meaning “to crash,” “to clash,” or “to collide.” The name captures the moment two concealed pieces meet and their ranks are challenged.

What is Salpakan?

It is the Filipino name for Game of the Generals, a strategy board game invented in the Philippines by Sofronio H. Pasola Jr. in 1970. It combines hidden information, bluffing, memory, and tactical movement.

How do I win?

Capture the opposing Flag, or move your Flag onto the enemy’s farthest row and keep it alive through the opponent’s next turn.

Why can’t I see enemy ranks?

Hidden identities create the game’s “fog of war.” You learn about the opposing formation through movement, challenges, memory, and deduction. Once the battle is decided, every rank still on the board is uncovered for both sides.

Can I change what stays hidden?

Two table rules sit under the deployment panel. Reveal ranks after combat leaves both units unmasked for good once they clash; Open board lifts the fog entirely, so every rank is visible from the first move. Both are off by default, and in an online battle only the commander who opened the table can set them.

Can I study the board after a battle ends?

Yes. Choose Review the battlefield to put the after-action report aside and read the fully uncovered board for as long as you like. The After action report button at the bottom of the screen brings the result back when you are ready to rematch or return to the menu.

Can two people play on one device?

Yes. Choose Local Duel and pass the device at each secure handoff. The board conceals the outgoing player’s information before the next commander continues.

Does the game save my progress?

Unfinished battles are saved automatically in this browser. No account is required, and the saved match stays on the device unless browser storage is cleared.

Can I change the appearance or sound?

Choose War Room, Sunlit Patio, or Stone Army for the board, then choose Heroic or Heritage Minis for the figures. Both choices are saved on this device. Current figures: HeroicColorful illustrated commanders with a bold adventure style. Current figures: Heritage MinisHand-painted Filipino historical-military tabletop figures. During a battle, open the upper-right controls in landscape mode to toggle sound or return to the menu.
